In the fresh edition of the TÜMRI blog, we discuss the scientific collections preserved at our institute. The Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology houses several scientific collections, which are part of Estonia's scientific heritage. The acquisition or creation of these collections is the result of efforts bonding several generations of scientists, often spanning decades. These collections themselves hold lasting and invaluable significance for education and research.

In this blog post, we explore:

  • How are scientific collections maintained and expanded?
  • What kind of collections are preserved at our institute?
  • Does it make sense for every research group to maintain its own collection?
  • An overview of three major collections: CELMS, the Estonian Yeast Repository, and the baker's yeast mutant collection.
  • The applied research projects in which these collections are currently used.
