We wish to understand how human genetic variation arose and diversified globally, as we know it today. It is an interdisciplinary research, where genetics & genomics mergers with history and archaeology, historical linguistics as well as data about paleoclimate etc. To achieve our goals, we co-organized, in the university, Collegium for Transdisciplinary Research in Archaeology, Genetics and Linguistics. Our chair works in historical symbiosis with the Estonian Biocentre within the Institute of Genomics and collaborates with many researchers worldwide.

Bioinformatics research group

Our current research focus is the role of DNA copy-number changes in female reproductive ageing and infertility, chromosomal instability in human, and bovine as a model, early embryos. In addition development and implementation of new methods for transcriptomics, genome editing and epigenetic profiling of small number of cells to enable functional studies from well-defined cell populations including embryonic- and stem-cells.

Research at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology is closely related to the teaching of young professionals.

The research focuses on the stringent response of bacteria. Stringent response is a universal mechanism in bacteria to survive stress. It is governed by the alarmone (p)ppGpp that is produced by RSH (RelA-SpoT homologue) enzymes. When the level of (p)ppGpp in cells increases, the growth of bacteria decreases, which helps them survive stressful conditions.
