Estonian delegation starts its competition today in the 30th International Biology Olympiad in Szeged, Hungary. The members of the delegation (from left to right on the photo, taken during the opening ceremony in Szeged National Teatre on July 14) are Andreas Must, Anna Pauliina Rumm, Kirke Joamets and Mari Remm.
The supervisors of the delegation are Kristina Põšnograjeva, Karl Jürgenstein, Uku-Laur Tali and Sulev Kuuse.

The new art exhibition by Tuuli Puhvel, titled  „Bright days in Tibet”, will be opened at the ground floor gallery  of the Omicum building Riia 23b/2, Institute of Genomics, University of Tartu, on Monday, 13 May at 16:00.

The exhibition will remain open until July 12.  

Everybody is welcome to attend the opening and the exhibition!

The exposition was supported by the Institute of Genomics and the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, University of Tartu.

Bright days in Tibet

Estonian Ministry of Education and Research chose textbook "Cell Biology" edited by Toivo Maimets and Sulev Kuuse, published by University of Tartu Press the best textbook in Estonian of 2018.

"Cell Biology" shared the prize with "Reproduction of bovine animals" edited by Ülle Jaakma and Mihkel Jalakas.

A new diagnostic method that is most suitable for Estonia was developed at the University of Tartu, which helps detect congenital metabolic disorders earlier and more effectively than before. The new method also helps discover more diseases in newborns with one screening.

The newborn screening for congenital metabolic diseases in Estonia was outdated and the 20-year-old system needed updating.

The scientific journal Nature Communications published an article by researchers at the University of Tartu in collaboration with colleagues from Chicago, which helps determine a bottleneck in synthetic biology. Their work shows where to look for the mistake and what to fix in order to assemble a well-functioning ribosome in a lab.

Prof. Frank Witlox, the Honorary Doctor of Geography of the University of Tartu and the Professor in Geography of the University of Ghent, gives a public lecture on Wednesday, March 6th. The lecture is scheduled at 4 pm and is held in Vanemuise Str 46 Granö lecture hall (room 327).

The opening assembly of the University of Tartu of the Republic of Estonia on 1 December 1919 marked the establishment of an Estonian-language university that was above all designed for Estonian students and to serve Estonian society. The centenary of the national university is celebrated throughout the year with a nation-wide cultural programme, an opinion festival and the largest gathering of alumni to date. The anniversary year draws to a close in December.

13.12.2018 at 12:15 in the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Riia 23, lecture hall 217 venia legendi lecture by Ingrid Kalev on the topic: „Aspects of developmental biology on an example of the human heart“.

The lecture takes place in connection with Ingrid Kalev’s candidacy to the position of the Professor of Developmental Biology in the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology.  

The lecture is in Estonian.

On December 10 at 5 PM photo exhibition „Mountains and nation“ by Sulev Kuuse and Riho Teras will be opened in the atrium of the Institute of Genomics, University of Tartu (Riia Street 23b/2).

The exhibition about mountains and Georgians will stay open until March 1, 2019. 

The exposition was supported by the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology and Institute of Genomics, University of Tartu.
