On 7 November, the council of the University of Tartu Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology re-elected Professor of Microbial Genetics Maia Kivisaar as the director of the institute for 2024-2026.

Regarding the PhD defence of Mariann Koel, a quest seminar will be held by Kalle Rytkönen (PhD, Adjunct Professor University of Turku), the opponent of the upcoming PhD thesis. The seminar takes place on November 9 at 16:00 in the auditorium 105 of the Omicum building (Riia 23b/2, Tartu).

On 27 October, the University of Tartu senate decided to award the Johan Skytte medal to Margit Sutrop, member of the Riigikogu and Professor of Practical Philosophy at the University of Tartu. The highest award granted to university members, the University of Tartu Grand Medal, is given to two university researchers for services of particular value. Also, the recipients of the University of Tartu Star of Appreciation, Medal, Badge of Distinction and the decoration “100 Semesters at the University of Tartu” have been selected.

The university will use the survey to find out what kind of mobility Estonia's largest university brings about and what attitudes staff and students hold towards sustainable mobility.

The University of Tartu and the Blood Centre of Tartu University Hospital invite university members to the Blood Donor Day in the Delta Centre on 2 November, from 11:00 to 15:00.

This summer, the university announced an architectural competition to find a design for constructing an academic and research building and landscaping the surrounding area at Maarjavälja. On 19 October, the procurement committee opened the ten entries submitted to the competition.

On November 10 at 09:15 Mariann Koel will defend her doctoral thesis “The molecular interactions between trophoblast and endometrial cells in embryo implantation” on Cell Biology.

On 25 October, the 391st anniversary of the founding of the University of Tartu is celebrated. There will be two lectures, flowers will be laid at memorials and a concert held to mark this occasion.

Although several measures have been implemented to close the innovation gap between the old and the new EU member states, the gap continues to increase. An analysis focusing on life sciences suggests that instead of importing talent from Western Europe, more emphasis should be laid on nurturing local excellence.

On September 29, 2023, a family day and a Researchers’ Night was celebrated in our institute for the second time. The event brought together a hundred of science enthusiasts, mostly school students as the primary target audience.

On 27 September, the presentation of the new university textbook took place at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology.

From 2 October to 5 November, all University of Tartu employees, students, alumni, their families and all others interested are welcome to complete the orienteering course and reconnect with the varied history of Toome Hill.
